The Unicorn Festival Research

Before I started painting my Unicorn, I conducted a range of research to explore Bristol's connection with the mythical creature and noticed Unicorns can be found all over the city in various places.

The Unicorn features on Bristols Coat of Arms and are common place in heraldry. The Unicorn can be seen in places such as the Cenotaph War memorial in the city centre and on top of city hall on College Green.

On the Coat of Arms, 2 Unicorns hold a shield showing a Caravel ship sailing away from the Water-gate of Bristol Castle, with the motto 'Virtute et Industria', meaning 'Virtue and Industry' sitting beneath it. Above the shield one can see two arms holding a serpent and a set of scales, said to represent wisdom and justice.

I chose to incorporate motifs from Bristols Coat of Arms in my design, which alludes and acknowledges Bristols history. I also included motifs that allude to Bristols potential future, being one of hope, equality, good education and environmental advocacy.

In my design I reference the American Paint Horse and Andinkra symbology that originates from Ghana.
